Every sauna has its own issues. If we‘d take a look at the outdoor saunas for garden, they all have these common issues:
(1) resin coming from the wood; (2) wood deformation; (3) mold appearance; (4) difficulties constructing the sauna on site.
And remember, it‘s not the fault of the brand, but it‘s because of the outdoor circumstances, that damage the material that the outdoor saunas are made of (it‘s mostly wood).
Let’s start with the first, and most common issue – resin coming from the wood. Spruce or pine are the types of woods – that are the most popular victims for the resin to become liquid and come out. Usually, in saunas, the temperature is somewhere about 100 degrees of Celsius. The resin inside the wood begins to “melt” and comes out as a liquid substance. Don’t panic – it’s natural, and there’s a solution. Even Mr. Ludwig’s ordered sauna was made out of spruce, so he also had to somehow deal with the problem. It’s the main issue with this wood, but still, it’s popular, because it’s relatively cheap. Not all of the woods have this problem. There are four types of woods, that are commonly used to make saunas. Of course one of them is fir, another is pine, then there is larch, and the most recommended one (to not experience resin problems) is thermowood. Thermowood is the most durable wood when it comes to the changes in natural and climate circumstances, and of course, the resin leaking.
Don’t panic yet – you still can order the saunas made from spruce and larch. The interior of the sauna is always made of the wood (linden), that doesn’t produce resin, so you can just sit back, and relax in the sauna, without the unpleasant resin. And the only possibility to solve the exterior issues with resin is to invest some money into the thermally modified wood outdoor sauna.
Wood deformation – maybe that‘s not the most common problem addressed, but it‘s definitely the problem, that causes the most damage. It‘s not impossible to solve this though. The most common object, that is damaged by this issue is the wooden door. Again – it‘s one of those issues, that is natural. You can solve this issue by investing some money into getting the outdoor sauna made from thermowood, and (as mentioned above) it‘s the most recommended wood to get. It‘s durable even at high temperatures and burns out every drop of water, it does not completely solve the issue, but it minimizes to the lowest possible chance of getting large wood deformations. Our customer, Mr. Ludwig, was constructing the outdoor sauna at winter. At this weather, the humidity is the highest. And please, keep this in mind, because Mr. Ludwig was constructing his sauna at the mid-winter, extremely humid circumstances, and with much water. The bent door is a result of temperature and moisture changes. As a natural product, timber will react to changes in atmospheric conditions (may shrink or expand). Visible splitting of the wood may occur as it expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature.
Now it’s time to address the another, natural, but not common in drier climates, issue – mold. Well, as you noticed, the mold requires water and a warmer climate. Talking about the climate, the temperature should be from 0-5 degrees of Celsius. If it’s too late, and the mold is here, then, at first, you have to clean the wood surface. Then use the special anti-mold agents (not FBI), and be sure to use different kinds of them, because some might work on your type of wood, some might not. If you don’t have mold yet – and want to be sure of not having it, we recommend you oiling the wood at least twice a year. Linseed oil is perfect here.
Outdoor sauna is not some kind of an office chair – sometimes, it’s a bit difficult to construct it. And to understand how, you need to know at least the basics of carpenter skills. Yes, we do pre-build the base parts (like sauna`s wooden base, full panoramic windows, doors etc..), but still, there are situations, that require people, with at least basic skills and knowledge. If you don’t understand something and face some kind of issues, we recommend you to consult a carpenter (or somebody else that has knowledge in this area). The building manuals are always provided by us, and they can even be acquired before your order. And of course, the best solution would be just ordering a factory pre-made garden sauna. It will be perfectly built for you – by us. Of course, a situation doesn’t always allow such luxury, because some locations are hard to access, that’s why self-assembly packages are extremely useful here.
